Either changing to smaller pipes or insulating the pipes well would reduce emmissions from the pipes to save some money. Changing to smaller pipes would change the characteristics of the system, as the reduction of a ton of pipe and water would make heating up and cooling down the system faster. As it is now, it is not meant to change temperature quickly, so setback and setup would not be as successful as small pipes. Changing to small pipes would also allow zoning, which can accomplish some energy savings.
