The switch on top is your pressure switch to save your life! You have bypassed it and you now have only the pressure relief valve to get rid of an overheat; but your boiler can still burn and blow up when you bypass the safety controls.

You can remove the pigtail and clean it or replace it. Be careful not to damage your pressure control while you do it - with the power off.
