50-80 is what I have seen suggested here in other posts - which is why I suspect my number is too low. I am in MA and used a 70 DTD, walls = R-5 (see below), attic = R-30. It does get down to -10F here at night, but I setback the T-stat to maintain that DTD. The estimators I used were pretty comprehensive (I thought) and provided parameters which closely matched my existing conditions. I do plan to upgrade the windows and increase the wall insulation where I can (I have 1" plaster walls and will attempt to blow in insulation from the attic for the 2nd story walls = fire blocked, balloon framing. Other options would be to remove vinyl w/ .5" insulating board over wood shingles over planks to blow in from the exterior , or gut the plaster and use fiberglas batts = not very feasible), but the plant as is cannot maintain below 0F and I have spotty DHW year round. I would consider replacing the DHW coil or add an aquabooster - but i am going to have to replace the boiler anyway. Any other suggestions?
