That would be expected in older cities, as gas lines were joined by packing joints that were lubricated to seal by oils, and rust and dirt would come down the line. That is why drip legs before the appliance were recommended early in gas piping history.

If your drip legs are missing, or have accumulated sludge, it is time for a cleaning. If you are in an area with new gas mains and lines, consult the gas utility to find their suggestions.
