Sludge is the result of oxidation. If no fresh water goes in to carry oxygen in (in other words there are no leaks) it will stop making sludge. Flushing the system as you have already done is enough. I've had a y-screen in my system for 20 years. I looked at it a few times after a decade during service and there has been nothing caught in it.
