I have a 40 year old steam heater and "a long story short" the transformer was removed. I have a 110 supply and was wondering what Voltage was needed for this heater. Does it need to be reduced or increased?

Right now when I turn it on it was a humming sound but doesn't fire up.

Also, are there different types of reducers for different things, because I hooked it up to one but it doesn't seem to be the right voltage. This has been driving me crazy and ANY help would be appreciated more than you know!
