Hello there. Any advice you can give me on the following boiler problem would be most appreciated.

My family has had a Vaillant VCW-sine 18 boiler for twenty years. Two years ago it developed a problem whereby if either the hot water or central heating was turned on there would develop a very loud knocking noise inside the boiler. It was fixed by a repairman. He replaced the diverter valve and everything was OK. However the same problem has recently started up again. We have tried replacing the diverter valve with a new one but it has not solved the problem, i.e. we still have the knocking noise. Please note that the knocking noise does not start immediately when the HW or CH is turned on. Rather, everything is OK for a few minutes but then the main burner flame increases in size and the knocking starts shortly thereafter.
Do you have any suggestions?
Many thanks.
