: Don't close the bottom valves, a one-pipe system has to allow the condensate to drop back down through the same pipe and valve. Restricting the flow would make a puddle at the bottom and cause the banging much the same as if the radiator was off level as in the pictures at the bottom of the page.
: Steam systems are ancient concepts created before electricity, so zone valves were not conceived as nsomething necessary. When you had central heat you had it everywhere, so manual adjustment was king. Today, you can buy automatic radiator vent valves that will self-adjust to the room temperature - not perfect, as steam is either incoming at 215F, or NOT, - but closer to automatic.
