I am totally clueless as to what to look for as far as purchasing a new unit. I would like to be educated enough to ask the vendors appropriate questions when they present a solution to me. Some info on my house in NY. House was built in 1935, steam heat. There is an unfinished basement where the unit is located. first floor has one full bath and is about 1000 sq feet. the old steam clunker radiators are in living room and 2 bedrooms. baseboard steam radiators in bathroom and kitchen. Second floor is half dormer with a full bath, approx 500 square feet with one steam radiator. Currently we have a Peerless JOT-3 cast iron boiler burner unit that is probably about 20 years old. Some labels on the Peerless indicate heating capacity of 148000 BTUs, 463 sq feet of steam , 111000 BTU/hr steam and 128700 BTU/hr water. There is also a Bock 51E 50 gallon hot water tank with a bock oil burner M-SR. The hot water system is about 16 yrs old. I am not sure if the system is more than we need, but my oil company is proposing a comparable capacity and I dont know if it is overkill. Can someone give me some guidance?
