How do I know if main vents are working?

I have bought a new house and would like the one pipe system to work as well as possible. It seems to work pretty well. I've read Dan Holohan's book.

I want to make sure the main vents work. Should they be venting air as the boiler cycles between pressures (the same as the radiator vents)? Or do they stay closed most of the time? When I have observed them, I have never seen them venting anything. Do I have to remove them to check them and, if so, to ensure that they work, do I just see if I can blow through them?

If I need to replace them, I assume I would just get the same size vents as replacements. Are main vents sold at such places as Home Depot? Thanks.
