Are you gas or oil? I assume hot water boilers if you are thinking series. You do not want to run two boilers in series, just parallel. If you are after the most efficient setup, get one smaller boiler and put the cost of the other one into building losses and an indirect water heater if you don't have one. There are other considerations such as high off-cycle venting losses of 2nd gas appliance etc. More details would help, but I'd go with one boiler. If you had a big boiler running all year it would warrant a good look at two. 240kBtu is not very big and with a careful heat loss calculation and some energy saving measures, I bet you could reduce that sizing quite a bit. The existing boiler should have worked real hard on the worst day you get. Are you replacing based on age/efficiency or is it a leaker?
