No, just like modern cars have electric fans that stay on til the engine cools some. The pump is controlled by the boiler temp. Shut off an older car with a temp gauge and it will climb way up on shut down. Also, you want to get the heat to your space instead of up the chimney. The stat has an "anticipator" that is a little electric heater (or electronic) that shuts it off early to prevent large temp swings. Some anticipators such as on the round Honeywell T87s are adjustable.
