Excessive water usage

During the last heating season my steam boiler started using more water. I had to fill it about every three days. I learned on this site that it could be ahole in the boiler, a hole inthe piping, or some faulty relief valves on the radiators. I don't think it is the relief valves. My question is; is there a test to determine whether it is a hole in the boiler or if it is a hole in the piping? Can a boiler repair service determine what the problem is before I go ahead with the repair or replacement.
Thanks for your help.
