Buying a house with an old boiler - what to look for?

I'm buying a house in San Francisco, CA that comes with what looks to be the original boiler from when the house was built in 1926. It's a huge cast iron thing that looks like it ought to run a train sitting in a closet off the kitchen. I've been told it circulates hot water, not steam. I've never owned a boiler before (actually, to be honest, never owned a house before either...) and had a few questions:

1 - What should I be concerned about (in terms of the boiler) before I buy this house? What should I look for to make sure it's working?

2 - Should I plan to get a new one or is this thing going to live longer than me? How do I decide whether it needs replacing?

Don't know if makes any difference, but the house comes with two radiators. There used to be four, you can see capped pipes coming out of the wall where they were removed.

Thanks for any advice!

-Robert
