When the oil is allowed to run out, the bottom oil is drawn from the tank. Usually the draw tube is a few inches from the bottom to avoid drawing sludge and dirt from the bottom, but sometimes it collects up to that point. Some of that can now fill the oil line and clog the filter. It can even get past the filter depending upon the filter type. Also water settles on the bottom, so that can be drawn in. These contaminants can clog screens, filters and the nozzle. It is not a simple job to flush the entire system, so calling the technician is best. They are used to dealing with this problem.

There is an oil service book on CD that is avalable at http://www.notaei.org that explains these problems and their solutions.
