I have a 1 1/2 year old burham steam boiler. Purchased the house with it already installed, (no labels of installer how funny) anyway I've had two HVAC and Master plumbers over to try to find out what is causing the sledgehammer like sound off the pipes. Over the winter the system was drained 3 times , blown out with compressed air, and an additive was added to try to reduce the noise. Nothing seemed to work, the water level was always kept at the manufacturer's recomended level. Since it is summer, I figured this is the time to fix it properly before it drives me crazy this winter.
