question 1: water leaks, cracks , and too much money to put in the same time.never interchange parts. and yes, some parts still available like baffles. question 2; it's like lotteries. question 3; too late to asked... yes some better some less but the weil is good if correctly installed. question 4; some old boilers have more efficiency than some new one, i have a 45 years old cast iron boiler reaching 70 percent of efficiency year after year compare to a new unit designed for 82 percent of efficiency but go to as low as 40 percent after acouple of years by a lack of maintenance.dont forget one thing , a lot of the energy lost by the body of the boiler go to heat your house, but that heat is declare a lost of energy when it,s time to compare efficiency. that's only one example, but it help to understand why your heating bills wont be cut in two even you changed your boiler for a 50 percent more efficient boiler.
