Thanks for the response. You were correct and the problem is now resolved. You put to rest five years of aggrevation.

I am still puzzled as to why the professional that I consulted did not mention the solution that you did. I had one come in and gave me an estimate of $300 to replace several valves. He never mentioned the zone valve being the issue. He said he worked on boilers for 30 years. Shouldn't he have known? Or is it the problem that obscure? In hindsight, it makes a lot of sense. I did the work he recommended myself - to no avial. Was the repair guy just trying to make an extra buck, or could he possibly not have known?

: The knocking may be from the zone valves. Try moving one zone valve lever to the open position for a day, then the other for another day. See if the noise stops on one day. Banging zone valves can sometimes be stopped by removing one of the springs inside the head cover of the Honeywell zone valve.
