What is the proper placement of the expansion tank on a basement residential hot water heating system? One contractor says it should go on the system return line. Another says it should go on the hot/supply/outlet side of the boiler. My present system has it on the hot/outlet side of the boiler, while the circulating pump is on the return line. The water inlet line (with pressure reducing valve) goes to the hot/supply line of the boiler.
