: You have found the source of a problem. The water trap, the U, should isolate supply steam away from the return by going below the water line. The U acts as a cheap steam trap. It is 'cheap' in the sense that the entire return run acts as a steam cooling chamber for steam that may be let past a radiator trap. A steam trap just past the end of the last radiator would force steam to turn to water at that point, so condensate only would pass in to the wet return, saving heat lost from the surface of the return pipe.

: Without supply steam condensing in the return line, much banging will cease.

Are you saying that I should drop the U so that it is below the boiler water line? Will this cause water hammer as it hits the water in the wet return? Or should I put an F&T steam trap at the end of main to prevent steam from entering the dry return.
