There is no "safe" compund to put into a system. Anything that can stop a leak also can stop circulators and block valves. Automobiles use a sealer in some antifreeze that expands and sets in contact with air when it reaches the leaking point, somewhat like white blood cells at a skin tear. But ethylene glycol auto antifreeze is also poisonous. The old leak-stops like oatmeal and pepper do the job, but are very prone to clogging the system. Schedule a boiler replacement for the first warm day.
