You probably have very hard water that is building up scale on your coil as it does your teakettle. Flushing amounts to filling the coil with 'vinegar' and dissolving the scale as you can in your kettle. Odds are good that that is what you needed before unless it was very old and any other factors thrown in. Valves are added to make it more convenient. You should look into having an indirect water heater installed, especially if you have or will have high usage of DHW.
