The relief valve is opened frequently to flush dirt and also check that the mechanism is not frozen in place so it can do the job of safety. Dirt sometimes lodges in the seat. Further flushing may free it. If not, replacement with the same rating is necessary as you can not plug it or you will create an explosion possibility.
