Air in Hot Water Heating System

Our hot water heating system sounds like waves breaking on the ocean shore whenever heat comes on. Please advise on proper way of purging air from the system.

There are two separate thermostat zones, one upstairs and one downstairs. There are butterfly valves and hose bibs on the two return pipes. Is there a preferred sequence for purging the two zones?

How long should it take to purge each zone? The house is approximately 2300 sq. ft.

Thanks for any help on this subject...we're southerners transplanted to the north and furnaces, etc., are new stuff!
