Soot on boiler

I have an old Burnham gas boiler and there is a large amount of soot built up on the inside of the front panel and it also seems to be getting on my walls above the baseboards. I have someone comming to check it out on Thursday but I was wondering if anyone has any idea's so I have an idea of what is going on with the system before the tech comes and looks at it. I don't know when the last time it was serviced, I've lived there for a little over a year and haven't had it serviced. There also seems to be balls of soot or something laying on the bottom by the burners. I was going to vaccuum it out but I thought I would leave it for the tech so he could see everything.
