O.K., let me try again. I think I used a couple incorrect terms. The Extrol tank is threaded into and air purger and the unit coming out the top is actually referred to as a float vent. I previously called it a bleeder. There is no bleeders near the boiler. I understand what you're saying about the adjustment to the fill valve, I just didn't try that yet as lowering the pressure didn't seem to help. In general, then, I'm assuming you agree the pressure should be les than the 24 psi the gage currently reflects. The sound is a dull knocking that starts awhile after the burner kicks on. It is an irregular rhythm and sounds like metal heating up. Almost as soon as the burner shuts off, the noise stops. There is no noise while the boiler cools down. I'm not sure what you mean by 'blown down'. I have flushed it. I doubt that it means much right now, but I thought I'd mention also, that the relief valve does not pop off under normal operation, but it does work.
