Removing air from radiator

Although I live in Europe, I'm sure the principles are the same. I have a "double" radiator (two parallel plates, connected by a tube) with the water going in and out of the rear plate. The rear is hot but the front is cold. I assume that I need to bleed the air (which I've *never* done in my life). Question: can someone post really *simple* step-by-step instructions? Do I need to turn off the radiator? (I live in an apartment building so I can't turn off the system) On the top of the front panel, there is a place to put a type of key (like on an old-fashioned skate) which I assume opens the vent. Do I just turn it a little bit until I hear air coming out? Many thanks for your help.
