On start up there is normally some spillage until the chimney warms enough to pull a draft. Hopefully that is less than a minute. Pitch up, short horizontal, lined, clear interior chimney etc help. Most residential heating equipment is negative fired so your leaks should be inward even over the fire. Soot tracks around leaks are a sign of bad draft, plugged chimney etc. Gas products leaking may show up mostly as excessive water vapor in the building.
