I've tried all kinds of paint.Latex does get mushy, and sometimes bubble. I've used Ace brand copper/gold-colored spray paint to paint several of our radiators that were originally painted in a bronze color. It has worked fine. I have one pipe that is a problem however. No matter what I paint it with nothing sticks, it ends up cracking and peeling. Last summer I sanded the whole thing down to bare metal and primed it with Bullseye primer/stain sealer. It also cracked. I recently scraped and sanded the cracked areas and tried latex over them, but now it's cracking again. My next step is to contact some steam furnace manufacturers and see what they reccomend. I've also tried a Benjamin Moore paint called Retardo- a rust-inhibitive paint which a contractor-friend said he uses to paint metal roofs which get very hot. This stuff smelled really bad when the radiator got hot, and just about made us sick. It took a couple of years for it not to stink. I haven't had that problem with any other paint- latex or oil. Please, let me know if you get any good advice!
