Six years is a short lifetime for a cast boiler and is a sign that the set-up of the system probably included a pressure over 2-1/2 pounds and an automatic water feeder. These assure that water is thrown out of the boiler and steam lost to be replaced with fresh oxygen-full water to rust the sytem. The banging helps create more leaks to bring in more fresh water.
