: I operate a 30 year old high pressure (2800#) boiler and the gas pass tubes are suffering from the inevitable sootblower erosion. My problem is that the maintenaince dept. keeps harping on us for blowing too often when in fact we blow only when necessary to facilitate heat transfer. Any suggestions???

First try looking at new high efficiency nozzles, if your current nozzles are eroding tubes then maybe it's time to change. Next you might investigate the installation of thermal drains, which are an automatic dump valve that monitor the temperature of the condensate above it and then open up to release condensate (as condensate builds up above the transmitter, the temperature goes down). We set ours for a slightly higher temperature than recommended, the downside being that we waste a little more steam because it dumps early but the upside being that we don't have unscheduled downtime due to tube leaks.

Hope this helps.
