Restricting the flow of water with a three-inch dirt barrier will affect flow in a natural-flow boiler. I haven't had the problem because inspectors in my state require a complete clean-out before the yearly permit. If you are accumulating dirt that fast in less than one year, you also have a feedwater problem.
