: the flow allows goes with the nut.ex. if you have a pipe that is vertical and the flow is going down into the drain, the nut would be on top with the flow going through it.

The nut should always be on the upstream side of the flow. There is 1 exception, that is on a vertical riser the nut should always be on top. This is so that it will not slide down the pipe when loosened.
