:OK if this is a hot water boiler and when you started it up you noticed a rise in pressure then this is not a good thing especially if it went into the red zone. an altitude gauge is usally another name for a press. gauge. if you have a hot water boiler then you should have a expansion tank to allow for expansion of the water. if this tank is water logged then there is no room for expansion. this means you need to add air to it. this can be done by draining the tank and letting the are back into it. the air will add room for the water to expand and contract this will keep the press. from rising like its doing. you may want to replace the gauge with a new on but check the press. rating on the boiler to help you size the gauge. the press. should not exceede 80 % of the max. press. rating on the boiler. if the max. rating is exceeded and the relief valve does not relieve then it should be replaced
