: Are there any new coal fired utility boilers being built ? With the environmental concerns of coal and the ability to install a gas turbine faster and cheaper is a coal fired utility boiler still a viable option ?

There are several new units prsently under various stages of permitting and construction. Although gas turbine generators and combined cycle plants are popping up all over the country Coal is still viable. Retrofitting existing facilities is a problem due to various EPA and Federal requirements for relicensing. However, there is a place for coal under new initatives from DOE and other organizations to construct more efficient and environmentally favorable plants. Check Power and Power Engineering articles for specifics.
