In many states, you don't have to have any experience of skill, just a banking contractor certificate. If in a specific geographic area, you will have to have certifications specified by the local authority; so ask them in your area. As HVAC a the most diverse occupation, your experience in boiler and control work might qualify you in hot water and steam repair and control; although residential work is surprisingly different than industrial work.
Air systems, ductwork design and residential heating and cooling equipment is an area of study. Contact the RSES, NHAW, PHCC, Hydronics Institute, New England Fuel Institute, manufacturers, and other vocational schools for their offerings.
