: How do I go about getting my license in NJ if I do not work on boilers yet?

Try to get a job in a manufacturing plant with a boiler room, many of the maintenance jobs in plants also take care of the boilers. Once you get the required operating time in, take a night class (many Vo-Tech's still offer classes) and get signed off on your application and sit for the test.

I know a few guys that got started this way, also a few started in Trash Burners, as general labor, and worked the way up.

Not an easy field to get into unfortunately.
