For example, a 180 KW boiler is over 18 BHP, it has eight elements of 22 KW each inside, each element is under $400, and they normally do not all fail. We are seeing replacement of one or two elements every 3-5 years, usually the upper elements where scale is more severe.
As for the efficiency, counting BTU in vs. BTU out, these electric boilers are about 95-99% efficient, the only heat loss is through the insulated pressure vessel. The 85% efficiency is for a boiler that looses energy through a stack.
