: I recently took a test for a stationary engineer license and having never been around recovery boilers I didn't do very well in those questions. One question comes to mind and I wonder if anyone can add some information for me?
: The question was something like this, "After a recovery boiler was put on-line, you notice that smelt is going into a empty dissolving tank. What do you do?"
: I answered the question by saying to activate the ESP. Was that right?
: Thanks.

I have worked in a pulp mill for 8 years as a Recovery Feild Operator. You would not ESP the boiler. You would want to trip liqiuor and try to cool the bed quickly by shuting the steam off to the primary and secondary air heaters. We have spout plugs at our plant and we would definitly plug each of the spouts to stop the flow of smelt to the dissolving tank until we get a level of weak wash into the tank. Hope this helps
