Adding water to your hot boiler after losing sight glass water level indication is probably the single worse thing that can be done. This is not a joke, and it should be part of "basic principles" of plant operations. From the way you frame the question, it appears that low water trips are not uncommon in your plant. In technical terms, this is called a "bad thing". If management is actually serious, tell them that the "as soon as possible" is after the unit cools off. If you can't educate them, walk away. They are going for a Darwin Award, and will improve the gene pool by their absence.
