: Susan,sounds like your thermocouple is going bad,when this happens the unit will keep trying to heat the thermocouple until it reaches full extention to keep pressure on main gas switch,if this is getting weak,it will just keep trying to fire until one of the times it works,it will fail completly soon.7 years is about there life time

Thanks so much for this quick help. I phoned and related your idea to a local gas technician, but he said my boiler, unlike other pilot lighting system, has an electronic ignition 'hot-plate' which wouldn't require thermocouple at all. So he said we're stuck! 8-(
