Susan,sounds like your thermocouple is going bad,when this happens the unit will keep trying to heat the thermocouple until it reaches full extention to keep pressure on main gas switch,if this is getting weak,it will just keep trying to fire until one of the times it works,it will fail completly soon.7 years is about there life time
