Can you point out what piping code (and what section) addresses this? I think you're talking about somebody's internal spec's for piping, as opposed to a specif code reference. ASME piping codes don't typically apply to low pressure applications, unless there's a nasty fluid service involved - like flammable or toxic.

In any event, very few contractor's or plant in-house maintenance shops will have the equipment to thread pipe over 6". Ridgid makes their model 161 threading head, which does 4" thru 6" pipe. If somebody has the rig to thread over 6" (other than a large lathe), my guess it's old-old-old.
