: What are sentinal valves? I can't find any reference to these in any of my boiler and turbine books.

Sentinel valves are small relie-type valves place on the turbine casing on the exhause side of the wheel. Their purpose is to open in the event of high exhaust pressure and give warning of same. Even though they are constructed like a safety relief valve, they serve no pressure relief function. They are solely used as a warning device.
