Suspect the pump operation. Multiple pumps change the flow rates and temperatures in the head. Some pumps off, with one running, can lower the boiler water flow rate and raise the water temperature in the tubes to produce high temperatures, even steam bubbles. Turning the pumps on can quickly bring in colder water, stressing the head or creating banging as steam bubbles collapse. Thermal and/or banging stresses can crack a head.
