You will want to know the pipe arrangement of the battery as opposing flows can cast water into the steam flow from one boiler to the next, making variations in the pressures in part of the manifold. Sometimes lowering the water level to throw drier steam can stop chattering. Also you want to know if the valve can be opened or has some slack in the stem connection from hammering over time so it can move and make sound.
