Another method to check for failed open traps (blowing steam) is look at the discharge. If steam comes out, the trap is failed. If in a closed system, you must use an ultrasonic type device that lets you listen into the trap and you can then determine if you are blowing steam.
If you are not sure, my choice is to repair or replace the trap because at the low pressure the trap is relatively inexpensive compared to the cost of steam that may be lost.
