I have done limited amount of work in the pits in New York City and Long Island, but just checking the traps and not repairing them. I have heard stories about many people dying in the pits due to a steam leak. It is not the heat but rather the steam evacuates all of the oxygen and these people suffocate to death.
So, one suggestion is: Get the boss to get you a tripod and a harness!! It is good there is a guy upstairs to help, but without the harness there will be no way for him to get you out of the pit should there be a leak.
Really, try to do it. And good luck, the pits feel better in the winter.
