Thermodynamic traps exposed to rain should be covered. Spirax Sarco makes a stainless steel insulating cap that snaps over the top of their TDs in those applications. They really do work, too. I would avoid thermostatic traps on drip applications. They hold back condensate until it's sub-cooled and this can mean condensate backing up into your steam mains.
