: I have a question what is a lantern ring and what does it do?, I have a centrifugal feedwater pump with packing can i remove the packing and install a mechanical seal, thanks

:Due to the channel that the packing box has, I don't think you can modify your pump with a mechanical seal. As far as what a lantern ring does, it is usually located in the middle of the packing rings and there should be a small bleed pipe going to the packing gland in that area. A small amount of leakoff is normal on these pumps to keep the packing lubricated. Believe me, do not overtighten the packing, you will burn it up and tear up the shaft sleeves and possibly damage the pump shaft.
